Described as “the most perfect and touching duet to come from the pen of any composer” by the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater rightfully deserves its place as one of the great liturgical works of all time. St Ann’s Ensemble, who gave a highly-acclaimed full performance of Handel’s Messiah in December, is directed by Simon Passmore.
