Composed in just three weeks, it is a masterful work, based on the subject of Jesus Christ; the prophecies of his arrival, his birth in the stable in Bethlehem, his death and resurrection, and finally the Day of Judgement.

Our performance is based on the first-known performance of the piece, this took place in Dublin in 1742. Handel made alterations to his original score so that it suited the soloists available – an Italian soprano, an English contralto and male soloists taken from Dublin’s cathedral choirs. St. Ann’s Ensemble, consisting of graduates of the RNCM, and St. Ann’s Choir will be directed by Simon Passmore.

Filled with dazzling solos (Rejoice greatly, Ev’ry valley) and powerful choruses (Hallelujah, Worthy is the Lamb), Messiah is the perfect start to the Christmas season. A must-see!
