Rachael Green   saxophone

Originally from Norwich, Rachael first entered the music world aged nine playing piano. She was quickly distracted by her teachers’ flute, and swiftly moved onto the clarinet, eventually attaining a Diploma Distinction in 2018. Shortly before then, in 2017 Rachael picked up the saxophone when her school big band required a tenor saxophonist, here she found her love of jazz and all things groovy. She fell in love with the tone of the tenor saxophone and dedicated her studies to jazz for some time. Rachael then went on to take her classical Grade 8 in 2019 after winning the Harrogate International Festival, the British and International Federation of Festivals Ninth Biennial Championships, the East Coast Young Musician of the Year award, and the St Peter’s School Music Festival three times. From here, Rachael attended the Junior Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in 2020, where she picked up the alto saxophone and discovered her passion for classical music. Since then, Rachael has fallen in love with the sound of the classical saxophone and has commissioned several new works and arrangements. Now studying at the RNCM, she teaches as a Woodwind tutor on Yorchestra (an orchestral course in York), performs at the Royal Albert Hall with the Music for Youth Scheme, and is resident saxophonist for the York Guildhall Orchestra.

Ben Attfield   piano

Ben is a graduate of the University of Manchester, where he obtained a First Class degree in Music, was awarded the Hargreaves Prize for Outstanding Dissertation, and was one of the winners of the 2022 Concerto Competition. He is now studying for a Master’s degree postgraduate at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) with Ben Powell, thanks to financial support from the Ian Scott Award. Ben works as an accompanist and piano tutor at Xaverian College, and is the rehearsal pianist for the Hallé Children’s Choir. In addition to this, Ben enjoys a varied freelance career working with various choirs and orchestras, including the likes of Manchester Camerata, NEW Sinfonia, Northern Film Orchestra, Kantos Chamber Choir, Manchester Chamber Choir, the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain, and Huddersfield Choral Society. He has also appeared in pit bands for over 30 theatre productions around the North West. An experienced chamber and orchestral musician, Ben has been a collaborative pianist for conservatoire and university recitals, BBC Young Musician of the Year, and the National Eisteddfod of Wales. Orchestral highlights have included performances of Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians, and music from the Harry Potter films, as well as concerto performances of Gershwin and Vaughan Williams. Whilst at university, Ben performed in solo and chamber masterclasses with Martin Roscoe, Penelope Roskell, Sir Mark Elder, the Quatuor Danel, and Huw Watkins.
